SOCCER – THE Premier League of Swaziland (PLS) has not given its stamp of approval to the proposed match between Mbabane Swallows and Manzini Wanderers planned for today at Mavuso Sports Centre, starting at 10pm.
Apparently, this game was sponsored by the 2010 World Cup Technical Committee to a tune reported to be in the region of E50 000 (with each team getting E25 000) and organised by Fresh Minds, an events management company.
However, the game has now been cancelled after it turned out that the organisers failed to follow the correct procedures in planning for it.
In a statement yesterday, PLS Chief Executive Officer (CEO)  makes it clear that no games under the auspices of his organisation are taking place nor has his office sanctioned any match between premier league teams.
“Therefore, the organisers of the above match, including the two teams have been formally advised by the PLS office to ensure certain football fundamentals are met before a go-ahead can be granted.
“In short, the organisers jumped the gun. Any inconvenience caused to the football loving fraternity is regrettable,” reads part of the statement signed by the PLS’ CEO. In essence, this means the game will no longer take place.
The game was planned as a cross-over to the New Year (2010) and it had been dubbed ‘2010 Sangena’, the entrance fee being E50 per head.
This is in respect of the fact that 2010 is a significant year in the sense that Africa would be hosting the World Cup for the first time as neighbours South African won the hosting rights.
When sought for comment, both Swallows and Wanderers confirmed receipt of the PLS’ notification that the game would not be allowed to continue.
Swallows manager Sibusiso Manana explained that they respect the PLS’ decision and advised the organisers of the event to conform to football requirements when arranging such games.
“Ensuring that football fundamentals are properly adhered to is the responsibility of the organisers, they should have ensured that everything was in order with regards to the game.
“We are hugely disappointed with the latest developments because we believe that we were dealing with the 2010 Office, which has officials that know football procedures when it comes to this tournament.
On the other hand, Wanderers publicist Xolisile Mohale shared the same sentiments and apologised to the team’s followers for the sudden cancellation of the game.
“Our followers were looking forward to crossing over to 2010 watching their favourite in action and we want them to know that the team would continue training to prepare for our opening league game against Malanti Chiefs on January 9.
We also take this opportunity to wish our supporters, players and officials a safe cross-over to the New Year,” she said.
