SBIS increases local content
Local music is being given first preference on the Swaziland Broadcasting Information Service (SBIS). As a result of the local station reviewing its music content, local music will receive considerable airplay as opposed to international music.
These changes were prompted by an outcry from local artists.SBIS Director Percy Simelane said they were pleased that the quality of local music was improving daily.
He pointed out that previously a majority of the music broadcasted was international, although there were a number of artists with equally good music.
“It has always been a dream for us that our own music gets maximum slots on radio. In the past the artist and the music quality was not that good but today even if you listen to other foreign radio stations they have now started playing locally produced music”, he asaid.
He added that that was proof that the quality of music in the country had improved.
“It is for that reason we are now hoping to play 80% of our very own music. South African musicians can now see that there is competition”, he further said.
He made reference to artists/ groups such as Bholoja and Ncandweni Christ Ambassadors, who had taken the local music industry to another level.
He went on to say that local content would receive maximum airplay on both channels ie. SBIS I and II.
Furthermore, he emphasized that the station was not about promoting artist business, but the culture of listening to local music.
He further encouraged artist to improve.
During the recent launch of Sigubhu Sebalozi’s debut album, the Swaziland National Council of Arts and Culture (SNCAC) CEO Stanley Dlamini said he was happy that traditional music was beeing given a chance in our radio station. He said this was a positive move to show that the Swazi artist have taken three steps ahead in terms of producing good music.
