Was journo Mantoe harassed?
CLERK At Table at the House of Assembly Ndvuna Dlamini has apologised to The Nation Reporter Mantoe Phakathi for her expulsion from the Chamber during the official opening of parliament last Friday.
Dlamini was Chairperson of the Committee that coordinated media activities during the event.
He refuted reports that he had abused the name of labadzala when he chucked out Phakathi from the Chamber. Initial reports were that Phakathi was denied permission to take pictures of His Majesty the King because she is a woman.
untrue
Dlamini says this is untrue because he is well versed on gender and the media, having attended workshops on this subject. He also described himself as "a career clerk who has been attached to liberal institutions like the House of Commons in the United Kingdom."
"I reject the allegation of sexism and gender discrimination with the contempt it deserves.
Actually, I regard this as not only an insult but a form of defamation that undermines my integrity and profession." Dlamini says Phakathi was ordered out of the chamber after serious concerns were raised by the security about her.
He says he had been informed that Phakathi was only accredited to cover the proceedings at the press gallery.
"Taking into consideration her interest to take pictures, special arrangement was made for her to take pictures of the MPs and Senators inside the chamber before assuming her seat in the press gallery."
Dlamini says Phakathi could not remain in the august House because the agreed limit for journalists accredited to cover proceedings inside the chamber had been reached.
apologise
"As a former media practitioner myself, who ascribe to the values of freedom of the press, I sincerely apologise in my capacity as the media co-ordinator to Ms Phakathi and The Nation for the embarrassment. I also apologise to all journalists who encountered problems and were inconvenienced during the opening of parliament."
Phakathi said she accepts Dlamini's apology.
Phakathi did
not cover head
SECURITY personnel are said to have raised concern over Mantoe Phakathi's failure to cover her head.
This is considered normal dress code for female MPs, Senators and journalists when entering the chamber.
Ndvuna Dlamini, the Clerk At Table at Assembly says it was through his mercy that Phakathi was allowed to enter the chamber, much to the disapproval of security personnel, who said he was "too soft" on her.
concern
Meanwhile, Phakathi said she had carried a cloth to cover her head, but that no one had raised the concern with her. "If they had told me to cover my head, I would have done that politely."
