Preparations to open University at an advanced stage
PREPARATIONS for the opening of the Swaziland Christian University (SCU) at Mahwalala are at an advanced stage, with the steering committee having attended a sixth working group meeting in Benoni South Africa, last week.
At the meeting, it was decided that the university should open early next month, with a course on family medicine that would be conducted in conjunction with the University of Pretoria and attended by local doctors and registered nurses.
Members of the local delegation comprised officials from the ministries of education and training, health and information communication and technology (ICT), all who agreed on the opening date and the progress of the institutions, which will see the introduction of additional faculties.
stakeholders
All three ministries are stakeholders in the project, as the university will have schools for medicine and information and communication technology. Both schools are earmarked for early introduction, while other faculties will be introduced once these are firmly established.
Attending the conference which follows the fifth one held in Korea last November, were the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Training Pat Muir, Chief Inspector in the Ministry of Education Peterson Dlamini, Director of Health in the Ministry of Health Simon Zwane, Deputy Chief Officer in the Ministry of Health Mavis Nxumalo and Under Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Technology (ICT) Bheki Gama.
Both Gama and Zwane were standing in for the principal secretaries in their respective ministries, Dr Stephen Shongwe and Nathaniel Mahluza, who could not attend after being held up by other ministerial duties.
accompanied
The government officials were accompanied by board members of the university that included Pastor Chong Yang Kim, Board Chairperson Phineas Magagula and Deputy Chairperson Dr Busa Xaba.
At the meeting, they were joined by officials from the University of Pretoria which has signed a twinning agreement with the SCU, and several professors from Korean universities which are assisting in the establishment of the SCU.
meeting
The meeting was also updated over the construction of the university premises at Mahwalala, where they were informed of the progress and that the administration block would be completed by the end of April.
It was disclosed that the family medicine course would be held at another venue awaiting the completion of the structures over the course of the year.
Faculties for the university were also finalised and it was agreed that asides from the school of medicine and ICT, faculties of art, education, and science and technology should be later established.
It was emphasised though that priority should be given to medicine and ICT as such skills were direly lacking in the country.
graduates
Furthermore, it was felt that the institution, as a Christian entity, should produce graduates that would be firmly entrenched in Christian values while moral regeneration should be part and parcel of its curriculum.
