Heads will roll - NFAS
SOCCER – THE National Football Association of Swaziland (NFAS) has asserted that heads will roll in the football fraternity following the extensive damage to the Somhlolo National Stadium artificial turf.
The damage which shows mysterious burns to the turf at the centre of the pitch was discovered soon after Mbabane Swallows’ MTN League match against Green Mamba on Saturday.
The NFAS Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Frederick Mngomezulu expressed his organisation’s disappointment at what has happened to the pitch and revealed that his association would get to the bottom of it to make sure that it doesn’t happen again.
He highlighted that putting the artificial turf into place cost about E5 million and repairing it would prove costly to government since the initial installers of the turf FIFA would not assist in this aspect.
“We expect everyone to respect this facility provided at Somhlolo, especially since there is a wide complaint about lack of adequate facilities in the country. This is a high quality facility that is expected to realise its 15 years life span.
“We’re still awaiting reports from the match officials of the day to ascertain the time they discovered the damage to the turf and we’ll take it from there. Although we’re not responsible for the pitch, but we’re an interested party in what goes on to the turf since at the end of the day, we are the ones which use the facility hence we will engage government and our entire membership to decide on steps to be taken,” he said.
Mngomezulu emphasised that the facility has to benefit even future players who will want to use it.
