Timothy Myeni apologises…again
MP and Ncandweni Christ Ambassadors founder Timothy Myeni feels like a weight has been lifted off his shoulders.
Myeni, who recently suggested that people living with HIV should be branded on their buttocks, apologised during a media briefing in Johannesburg yesterday organised by the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), a South Africa group that campaigns for the rights of people infected by HIV and for better healthcare in general. The TAC had previously threatened to lobby for a boycott of Myeni’s Gospel Group Ncandweni Christ Ambassadors’ music across the SADC region. Speaking during an interview on his way back to the kingdom after the press conference, Myeni confirmed that he had indeed withdrawn his statement and apologised. Questioned whether he feels TAC’s threats of a boycott of the group would affect album sales, he said he didn’t know for certain if the TAC which was named the world’s most effective AIDS group by the New York Times would continue lobbying for a boycott. “I really don’t know if they plan to continue with the boycott. What I have done is apologise and they accepted my apology”, he said. He referred all other questions pertaining to a boycott to the TAC. Myeni admitted that a boycott is the last thing the group needs.
—-TAC Accepts Myeni’s Apology With Conditions
The Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) accepts MP and Ncandweni Christ Ambassadors founder Timothy Myeni’s apology.
However, there is a catch.
The TAC accepts his apology on condition that he returns to Swaziland and apologises on all media platforms and positively speaks about the prevention and treatment of HIV/ AIDS.
Drawn for comment on whether the TAC will pursue a previous threat to lobby for a boycott of Myeni’s Gospel Group Ncandweni Christ Ambassadors across the SADC region, the TAC’s Provisional Co-ordinator in Gauteng Lifa Tlame said they reached an agreement with Myeni.
“What we have said is we accept his apology but he should return to Swaziland and make a public apology either on radio, TV, newspapers and public meetings and categorically distance himself from the remarks he has made.
“We also asked him to commit himself to positively speaking about the prevention and treatment of HIV/ AIDS as well as encourage available scientific evidence with regards to the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS and conduct himself as a leader”, Tlame said at length.
—-Myeni To Speak About HIV Awareness During Gospel Concerts
MP and Ncandweni Christ Ambassadors founder Timothy Myeni is required to become an advocate for HIV treatment and prevention during Gospel Concerts.
This was according to the Treatment Action Campaign’s Provisional Co-ordinator in Gauteng Lifa Tlame. During an interview, Tlame said, “When he performs with his group in South Africa, we expect him to raise awareness about HIV/ AIDS.”
Tlame also said Myeni who is the leader of Ncandweni Christ Ambassadors is not only expected to apologise to Swazis but also to South Africans and the rest of the world.
