Calls for human rights commission intensify
WHILST Swaziland has been applauded for signing treaties international human rights.
She is yet to domesticate these into the local context. This includes establishment of the Human Rights Commission.
“The UN can and is prepared to support it in continuing these efforts,” United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Coordinator Musinga Bandora said.
He was speaking at Orion Hotel in Pigg’s Peak at the opening of the Human Rights Based Approach and Results based management training workshop.
The workshop is attended by 48 representatives from government, civil society and UN country team staff locally and those at international level from Oslo Governance Centre and New York.
Bandora said capacity development from the perspective of human rights based approach meant supporting capacity of governments to fulfill their human rights obligations.
“For example, in supporting them domesticate regional and international human rights standards, whilst at the same time supporting citizens to claim their rights.
“This would be for example through empowering civil society to take part and have a voice in national policy processes,” he said.
The UNDP Resident Coordinator said the UN had an important role in defending, promoting and advocating for human rights.
In this regard, they will work closely with all partners to design appropriate strategies and advocate for human rights within the context of development work.
