Human Rights lawyer out on bail

Human Rights lawyer Thulani Rudolph Maseko, who on Friday appeared at the High Court in leg irons, was granted a bail of E15 000 in cash.
Maseko was admitted to bail by Judge Qinisile Mabuza following a decision by the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions not to oppose it.
As part of his bail conditions, Maseko will report at the Bhunya Police Station every last Friday of the month.
Both parties have also agreed that Maseko should not be made to surrender his passport to the police.
Maseko, who was clad in a navy blue track suit, was represented by Mandla Mkhwanazi while Ndzingeko Dlamini appeared for the DPP’s office.
Maseko is charged with contravening the Sedition and Subversion Activities Act of 1938 as amended.
He was arrested week Wednesday at his homestead Ka-Luhleko     in connection with seditious statements he allegedly made on May Day at Salesian Sports Ground this year.
The human rights lawyer allegedly made sensitive statements about the Lozitha Bridge bombers.
In his bail application, Maseko said his release would not endanger public safety, adding that there was no likelihood he would commit any offence whilst out on bail.
“Of particular importance, I state that I will not abscond trial once admitted to bail,” he said.
“The gravity of the charges levelled against me do not induce any sense of shock on me as I strongly believe in my innocence. The charges, therefore, do not constitute an inducement on my part to abscond trial, as I view the charges as having been preferred to intimidate and silence me for advocating and promoting basic and fundamental human rights for citizens of Swaziland.”
