HIS Majesty King Mswati III is expected to officially open Sikhupe International Airport soon, as preparations for this are already underway.
Information gathered from impeccable sources is that different companies have already been awarded tenders for the decoration and catering during the event that is scheduled for early next month.
When reached for comment, government spokesperson Percy Simelane confirmed that there were preparations that were currently being made after he called the relevant authorities.
“I have double checked with them and was told that preparations are being made for the opening. Though the date is not final and it is yet to be confirmed,” he said.
Swaziland Civil Aviation Authority (SWACAA) Corporate Affairs and Marketing Director Sabelo Dlamini first wanted to know how the information of the preparations was obtained. He said they had to await directive from higher authority for the exact date of the official opening.
Dlamini denied any knowledge of tenders that have been awarded to people for the event that is scheduled for March. When asked what event they were preparing for, Dlamini said he was unsure.
Sikhuphe International Airport was completed last year and is expected to handle up to 300 000 passengers a year. However, the Ministry of Economic Planning has said numerous times before that the airport would be opening and the date had to be later postponed.
