THE Coordinating Assembly of Non-Governmental Organisations (CANGO) yesterday launched the NGO week focusing on informing the public about development work they do.
CANGO Executive Director Emmanuel Ndlangamandla said NGOs were playing a significant role in complementing government regarding provision of critical services to the population, especially those in peri-urban and rural areas of the country.
“NGOs programmes include; health, HIV and AIDS, social protection for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, women and the disabled, food security, disaster management, environment, economic empowerment, gender issues, civic education on human rights and participation in decision making,” he said.
He said the NGO week provided an opportunity to share information with stakeholders noting the critical areas stakeholders should understand is how the sector operated.
“As public institutions that depend on the development partners’ support, the private sector, some on government subventions and also contributions of the public, it is critical to share information with these stakeholders as part of efforts to account for resources they provide.
“This week will enable us to share the code of conduct that the CANGO Annual General Meeting adopted in 2008 and serves to guide all our members regarding our operations and ethical considerations”.
He said the Code of Conduct aimed at promoting accountability, transparency, involvement and participation of beneficiaries in the work of NGOs.
The CANGO Executive Director encouraged their members to open their doors to the public this week in an effort to educate and inform the nation about their operations and generally development work on the ground.
The NGO Week will culminate in the Open Day to be held at Millennium Park in Manzini on Saturday where there would be exhibition of NGO work and games in order for stakeholders and everyone involved to have fun.
Starting time for the NGO Week is 9am till late and UNDP Resident Coordinator Timothy Bandora is the principal guest.
