AIDS DAY: Manzini Council teams up with corporates
THE Manzini corporate sector and non-governmental organisations are expected to partner with the Municipal Council of Manzini in celebrating the 2009 World AIDS Day.
Corporate entities which have a presence in Manzini, including Swazi MTN, Swaziland Electricity Company, Swaziland Water Services Corporation, Swaziland Posts and Telecommunication Corporation (SPTC) will tomorrow converge at the Tum’s George Hotel at a breakfast meeting to discuss issues relating to HIV and AIDS at the workplace as well as other issues related to the disease.
Manzini City Council Public Relations Officer Mathokoza Thwala said this would come as a build-up to the main World AIDS Day event for the Manzini region which had been scheduled for November 27, a few days before the date of the national event on the 1st December 2009.
He said the reason they, through its HIV and AIDS wing popularly known as LaMvelase Help Centre, decided to rope in other stakeholders in celebrating the event was to ensure that it received support from all angles.
“Most corporate institutions, especially banks, have employee wellness programmes hence it would be good to share ideas so that the celebration of the 2009 World AIDS Day could be more meaningful. The institutions will also be expected to give full support to the commemoration by sending their employees to attend the event on November 27,” he said. He said as a Council, they hoped that the partnership would mark the beginning of a new era in urban Manzini with regard to issues of HIV and AIDS.
“It is no doubt that the HI Virus continues to wipe out the nation hence a concerted effort towards fighting the spread is vital,” said the PRO.
