MTN SD staffers’ jobs safe for now
MTN Swaziland need not worry about their jobs despite reports that about 400 might lose their jobs at MTN South Africa.
A MTN Group media release issued yesterday stated that MTN South Africa would embark on a headcount management drive to improve operational efficiencies and plans to reduce its permanent and temporary workforce as a result of the decline in the economic environment. It said approximately 403 permanent employees may be affected towards the end of March next year, which comprises about 7% of MTN South Africa’s 4 679 permanent employees.
Adding, the press release said MTN South Africa would also be reducing the number of temporary employees in its service during 2010 and would try to limit the number of jobs affected.
MTN Swaziland Corporate Affairs Manager Mpumelelo Makhubu allayed any fears that these plans by MTN South Africa might affect the local company and its staff. “The headcount management drive only affects MTN South Africa as stated in the MTN Group media release,” he said.
“The position as mentioned by MTN Swaziland CEO Tebogo Mogapi earlier in the year still stands, which is, MTN Swaziland is monitoring the effects of the global financial meltdown and has not yet come to a decision of downsizing staff.”
Meanwhile, MTN South Africa said in addition to the reductions in its workforce, it was re-engineering its business in response to an outlook of lower growth due to the negative impact of the global recession on consumer spending and RICA compliance issues.
