Govt buys E4m cattle ear tags
GOVERNMENT has awarded a E4m tender to Farm Services for purchasing cattle ear tags.
The tender was awarded in October and forms part of the E185 m tenders disbursed by government to local companies in the past month.
Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture PS Dr. Robert Thwala explained that the ministry had embarked on a national livestock identification programme and that cattle ear tags form part of an implementation process for this exercise.
Thwala said the exercise targets all cattle owners in Swaziland and is aimed at minimising among other things, cross- border rustling, local stock theft and stray cattle.
“The national livestock identification exercise started a couple of years ago and is an implementation of the National Livestock Identification Act of 2001.
“The process entails branding livestock, especially cattle with ear tags that will contain useful information like its dip-tank number as well as information about their owners”.
strategy
Another telltale identification strategy includes branding cattle with a symbol like that of a shield, so that when cattle stolen from Swaziland are easily identified in other countries because of the national ID.
Thwala said amongst the first beneficiaries of this identification, programme would be cattle owners who live along the border gates where cattle rustling was most rife and the exercise will be carried out further in-land in due course.
The PS Dr. Robert Thwala indicated that the second phase of this project would entail computerising the ear tags. Explaining the significance of computerisation, Dr. Thwala said all information contained in the ear tags would be loaded to government computer systems so that with the punch of the cattle’s ID, all information pertaining to lost and stolen cattle would easily be retrieved.
