GOVERNMENT awarded tenders worth E185 million to locally owned companies in October.
A bulk of these went to the ministry of public works and transport.
Tenders for this public works ministry were in lieu of a wide range of projects with the most notable being the repair of storm damaged government buildings, rehabilitation of courts and hospitals, construction of new flats at the Mbabane police camp, construction of vehicle and learner driving testing centre, construction of vehicle shed and bridge at Ngonini and many other activities.
As storms gained momentum this summer, Gijimani Construction was awarded a E700 119 tender to rehabilitate storm damaged government buildings which were not spared from the violent storms and hailstorms witnessed recently.
Another project undertaken by the same ministry was the rehabilitation of the Pigg’s Peak Magistrates Court, and the work was staggered down to three categories that included the general facelift, air conditioning and the installation of electrical and fire alarms.
Government put close to E9 million for the rehabilitation of this court.
In a report, the ministry of finance states that the Central Tender Board met five times in this month and considered 55 submissions, including a number that had been previously deferred. The report states that 39 tenders were eventually approved with two of these being for previous submissions that had been previously deferred.
The ministry said two submissions were rejected and are to be re-tendered. They are tender 116L, which is for the rehabilitation of the Income Tax building and tender 116m for the rehabilitation of the air conditioning system for the same building.

MACNABS refrigeration, one of Swaziland’s long serving players in the refrigeration industry was awarded a E2.7 million tender for the rehabilitation of the Hlatikulu Government Hospital mortuary, and another separate E2.7 million tender to rehabilitate the same hospital’s laundry equipment.
Again, Macnabs went home with a tender to rehabilitate the hospital’s kitchen and this one was valued at E2.1 million. Hlathikhulu Government Hospital also serves a referral for a number of clinics and public health units (PHU) in the Shiselweni region.
The general rehabilitation of this hospital went to N.S Construction which was awarded a E27 million tender specifically for this project. Vectron investments won two tenders worth E1. 4 million in respect of rehabilitating the hospital’s incinerator and standby generator.
