Sikhuphe vying to beat 2010 deadline
PROSPECTS are high that the Sikhuphe International Airport will be completed before the World Cup begins, that is, in March 2010.
Consulting firms and contractors informed the Taiwanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Timothy Yang, through the Sikhuphe joint venture contracts manager Shaun White that despite the glitches experienced here and there, the airport would have been completed by the time the world cup in South Africa arrives in 2010.
The recent rains have been cited as one of the many glitches which have been experienced during the construction process.
Yang heard the heart-warming assurances during a site visit to the under construction airport yesterday.
He was in the company of the ambassador of the Republic of China on Taiwan Peter Tsai, Minister of Economic Planning and Development Prince Hlangusemphi, Minister of Public Works and Transport Ntuthuko Dlamini and other high ranking government officials.
Taiwan has pumped millions of American dollars towards the construction of Sikhuphe and the country also assisted with the much needed technical assistance.
The foreign affairs minister could not help but heap praises on the construction team and the consulting firms which he said have displayed sterling performance. He said the work they had done is amazing and that if the current progress is anything to go by, the Sikhuphe would become a masterpiece once completed.
Yang said Taiwan was happy to have made modest contributions towards the construction of such an important infrastructure.
Seeing the work that has been done thus far, Yang pledged to engage his government and the relevant stakeholders to expedite the processes for further assistance that will go towards Sikhuphe from his country.
Prince Hlangusemphi thanked the minister for such a kind gesture and acknowledged that further assistance would come in handy because there is still a lot of work that needs to be done at the airport.
Meanwhile, the senior engineer for Ceci consultancy which is a Taiwanese consultancy echoed the contracts manager when he said the entire team at Sikhuphe was working hard to see the project completed at the targeted time in March 2010.
The construction of the airport is a joint venture between Inyatsi Construction Company, Stefanutti and Bresan (S&B) and RSEA construction.
