Long serving employee Meshack Kunene has been appointed Managing Director for the Swaziland Electricity Company (SEC).

Long serving employee Meshack Kunene has been appointed Managing Director for the Swaziland Electricity Company (SEC).

Kunene has been acting MD since the departure of the former incumbent last year.

The appointment of Kunene was announced by the Marketing and Corporate Communications Affairs Manager Sifiso Dhlamini through a press statement yesterday.

The statement states that Kunene is one of the longest serving SEC employees with over 36 years of service.

The 56-year-old Kunene first joined the company as a trainee engineer on July 21, 1981.

Chairman of the SEC board of directors S’thofeni Ginindza yesterday said the SEC Board of Directors is confident that Kunene will steer the company to greater heights during his three-year term in office.

Ginindza said they were happy with Kunene’s academic credentials and vast experience.

“He has been with the company as an Engineer all his working life and he knows a lot about it. We have every reason to be confident in him and we are looking forward to a renewed and vibrant SEC,” Ginindza said.

Kunene previously held the position on an acting basis after the departure of the then MDs Themba Tsela in 2003, Pius Gumbi in 2011 and Sengiphile Simelane in 2016.

He has been holding the position of Acting Managing Director since February 2016.

It is also worth mentioning that Kunene was once fired by the former MD Simelane under a cloud but was later recalled.

Kunene has held various other positions in the company, which included the following; technician, planning engineer, distribution engineer, distribution manager, general manager operations and general manager resources and strategy.
